The Role of Nurses in Promoting the Use of Medicinal Cannabis

Ivana Rodrigues Vaz, José Arturo Costa Escobar, Danielle Cássia de Oliveira
This research aims to explore the role of nurses in promoting medicinal cannabis, focusing on their responsibilities and contributions to treatment safety and efficacy. The study highlights the lack of guidelines, protocols, and regulations in Brazil defining nurses' roles in this context. While other countries have developed professional and educational guidelines, Brazil's regulatory gaps affect both nursing practice and treatment safety. An integrative review was conducted on articles about Cannabis sativa and its derivatives, retrieved from the Virtual Health Library, filtering major databases like SciELO, LILACS, and MEDLINE. Of 33 studies, 9 were included in the review, and 24 were excluded based on specific criteria. The review identified a complete absence of Brazilian guidelines or protocols regarding the role of nurses in administering medicinal cannabis. In contrast, countries such as Chile, Argentina, Greece, Spain, and Canada have progressed in establishing guidelines for nursing care in this field. The study highlights the need for regulatory and educational improvements in Brazilian nursing concerning medicinal cannabis. It stresses the importance of including medicinal cannabis in nursing curricula to equip professionals with knowledge of dosages, side effects, drug interactions, and ethical considerations. The lack of specific guidelines for nurses hinders the establishment of good clinical practices, which can affect patient care. The urgency of overcoming prejudice and misinformation about medicinal cannabis is emphasized. Proper nurse training can significantly improve care for patients using medicinal cannabis. The study advocates for the development of protocols and further research into the impact of nurse training on clinical practice. Concrete actions are needed in the regulatory and educational sectors to allow nurses to take a more central and specialized role in caring for patients using medicinal cannabis.
