Storytelling with youth to drive harm reduction policy and practice in Canada, Part 2: The Crackdown podcast “Kids on the Block” series

Jade Creelman
In Part 2 of this two-part presentation, youth activist Jade Creelman will reflect on their involvement in the Crackdown podcast “Kids on the Block” series, and how working with Crackdown intersected with their harm reduction activism in Saskatchewan, Canada. Crackdown is an award-winning, monthly podcast about drugs, drug policy, and the drug war led by Vancouver-based drug user activists in collaboration with researchers and professional radio producers. Jade will describe developing harm reduction programming rooted in their personal experiences that emphasize youth’s voices and direct participation and real relationship-building. Jade will reflect on storytelling as a privilege you earn from people by building trust and confidence among the people you want to listen to, and creating programming that youth can relate to. They argue that building trust with inner-city youth in Saskatoon earned stories that saved lives, sprouted a community of care, and built brave spaces where often suppressed and quiet youth were able to express their thoughts knowing they'd receive only care and compassion in return.
