Sustaining Harm Reduction in War Time Ukraine

Tetiana Deshko
Since the start of full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which brought mass migration, destruction of health and social services, mental challenges, critical services for the 340,000 PWID community had to be revised to be able to contain the epidemics and provide the necessary support. Such revisions included greater reliance on take-home and long-acting OAT, provision of greater stocks of commodities as well as mailing commodities and tests ordered online, provision of services in mobile vans in hard-to-reach frontline territories, establishment of telemedicine services to support people wherever they are, development and launch of virtual outreach worker to provide support 24/7. Thanks to the concerted effort of stakeholders, pivotal role of civil society, reach of harm reduction services has increased and HIV and HCV epidemics in Ukraine stay under control after 3 years of war.
